Take national hopes and mix it with some of the world's best runners; and you have the structure of the two 5000-meters during this year's Oslo Bislett Games.

Built around the home favourites

On the men’s side, there will be a Norwegian match between Narve Gilje Nordås, Henrik Ingebrigtsen and Magnus Tuv Myhre. Spice this up with sub 13 runners like Getnet Wale, Milkesa Mengesha and Jacob Kiplimo and complement with such a strong 1500-meter runner as this winter’s indoor world champion Samuel Tefera and you have the prerequisites for the most part.

In the women’s 5000 meters, the home hope Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal meets European opposition in the German Konstanze Klosterhalfen, British Eilish McColgan and Turkish Yasemin Can – in a small preview of a possible European Championship duel we can see in Munich later this year.

The global top level is taken care of by, among others, Ethiopian Ejgayehu Taye, who is number five through all time with 14.12.98, countrywoman Fantu Worku and Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba.
